Paizo is renowned for its open communication with fans all its staff members are active on their messageboards, and (as you will see below) they have a long history of allowing their fan base to playtest new rules and ideas. When WotC pulled the magazines in house, in connection with the launch of D&D 4E, Paizo switched to become its own RPG publishing house. Paizo began as a magazine company, who obtained the licenses to Dragon and Dungeon. It's almost impossible to discuss Pathfinder without mentioning its publisher, Paizo. Stick to products with one of the following two labels until you are fully comfortable with the system. Important Note: While you may find discussions indicating that Pathfinder is "backwards-compatible" with D&D 3.5, that does not mean the products are interchangeable unless you are experienced with the games. But it's history goes several years farther back, for the game itself is based on Dungeons & Dragons (3.5 Edition) - when Wizards of the Coast moved on to the 4th edition of that game, Paizo decided to use the "Open Game License" to keep a derivative of D&D 3.5 in print.
The Pathfinder RPG was published in 2009 after extensive public testing. It is quite rules-heavy, but it is extremely well-supported. Pathfinder is a game of high fantasy with a strong focus on combat. Your fighter, wizard, priest, or rogue character (amongst many, many other options) will battle dragons, orcs, and demons, accumulate treasure, and - provided they survive - advance to epic powers. Pathfinder is one of the most popular "all-purpose" fantasy role-playing games, in the classic style of Dungeons & Dragons.
